Elliot Manyika (July 30, 1955 - December 6, 2008)
BULAWAYO – THE Minister without Portfolio and Zanu-PF national political commissar, Elliot Manyika, has died.
Manyika (53) died after he was involved in a road accident on the 145-kilometre peg along the Zvishavane-Mbalabala Road yesterday morning. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo.
Police spokesman Superintendent Andrew Phiri confirmed the minister’s death last night.
“I can confirm that this is what has happened,” he said.
According to Supt Phiri, Cde Manyika was travelling from Mutare to Gwanda in Matabeleland South where he intended to preside over the election of Zanu-PF leaders in that province.
A tyre on the official Mercedes-Benz in which he was travelling burst, resulting in the driver losing control. The vehicle veered off the road then rolled.
Both the minister and driver were trapped. A doctor, who was driving past, carried them to Bulawayo where Manyika was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver is said to be recovering.
Zanu-PF deputy secretary for legal affairs and Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi last night described Cde Manyika’s death as a huge loss to the party.
“We have lost a dedicated cadre, who always worked so diligently for the party. I don’t have much detail at the moment, but I think the Politburo will have to meet over his hero status,” he said.
Born on July 30 1955 at Rosa Clinic in Chiweshe, Manyika attended Bare Primary School before proceeding to Kutama College for his secondary education.
He later studied for a Masters degree in International Policy Studies with the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom.
Manyika joined the Zanu-PF Youth League and worked in different capacities in government, including in the then ministries of Local Government and National Housing as well as in the Ministry of Women’s Affairs. He became under-secretary in the President’s Office.
In 1999, he was appointed Zimbabwe’s High Commissioner to Malawi before being recalled in 2000 to become Mashonaland Central governor and Resident Minister.
In this capacity Manyika was instrumental in the implementation of the fast-track land resettlement programme in the province.
He became Bindura Member of Parliament following the death of Border Gezi. Manyika became Zanu-PF national political commissar in 2001, a position he held until the time of his death.

i don’t see any reason why i should moan manyika , he had caused much pain within me during his time- what a greeedy and dull minister without portfolio he wanted money and didn’t care about other people’s lives fortunate enough he was not aware of zanu policy that once a zanu no more turning back even Grace doesn’t like zanu but can’t withdraw
ndonyaya yacho -wakazviparira wega
He was a minister without portfolio because he was a dunderhead. We buried him at the same place we laid to rest real heroes so that they guard and make sure he does not come back to haunt us.
How could people tarnish someone’s name and surname. What I know is that people ONLY remember wrong doings but the goodies will never be said. As this reveals it means Zimbabweans are not yet civilised no wonder why they are running away from their homes to other countries. Leaving behind own relatives without anything to do.
gogo (Muroora wemaKorekore, Mai Manyika) afirwa haatariswi kumeso uye makobvu nematete anotaurwa. Chemai netariro chete, ruzhinji runepenga.
Sure, may his soul rest in peace and let God be the judge. I am surprised people are dragging God’s name to celebrate another human beings death, no wonder why we are being punished as Zimbabweans, I think people should leave God out of this and its only the creator who decides who is going to hell and who is going to heaven, its not for us to judge. The same things that we condemn Zanu-PF for, we are just as guilty as them, if we are to celebrate death the way they do it. People are entitled to their opinions but bringing God into this is questionable.
God created man in His own image because He loved him. Who are you to kill God’s Creation. The Bible is clear with its God’s Commandments – “Thou Shall Not Kill”. The reason why we hate other people is because we hate ourselves. Love your neighbour as you love yourself. It those killings, kidnappings, tortures, rapes and abductions were done on Manyika’s children, how was he going to feel? How were Manyika’s wife and relatives going to feel? Were they going to be quiet? I personally dont rejoice at Manyika’s death, nor Mugabe’s when he dies. I wont rejoice or celebrate, it was my wish to see Manyika live to see God’s power and that is what I wish for Mugabe, to live long to see God’s power.
When someone died, I used to say “wafa wanaka” but for this ZANU PF thug masquerading as a minister of government, I say, may the devil himself deal with you. If possible, raise him up and kill him AGAIN!
